both are important, and have contributed extensively to America's success. Katrina especially revealed the importance of the NO port - which Jefferson and Jackson had understood. (Which Congress for decades prior had failed to understand when the CoE submitted repair and upgrade projects.)

The growing 19th century prosperity of the American midwest from the economic shipping advantage for the farmers, lead to a lot of money in those banks that the east coast had no control over and could not turn into the European based financial scams. That led to the Fed, which is largely controlled by the NY contingent.

Prior to the Spanish American War, the additional geographical advantage of a Central American canal connecting the two oceans had been in consideration since before the first attempt by the French in 1881.

Once completed in 1914, it greatly added to America's ability to move both commercial goods and the military ships to protect and promote US hegemony under the cover of corporate enterprise rather than more overt military aggression and possession than we did do.

Now we are a still militarily powerful country, economically threatened by the uncontrolled financial excesses of the big banks and corporations on a global scale, as is the rest of the globe. And as mole333 explains Diamond's Collapse premise, our danger is

a ruling class blinds itself to the cliff the society is heading for
Willard and the rest are so bound up in their convictions, they can't seriously consider the extensive contrary evidence. They take it even farther into cognitive dissonance with pretzel thinking that turns information and ideas like Diamond's into support when it actually contradicts.

Google & Amazon do not have the name of Diamond's new book in the publication chute that was mentioned at the end of the NYT article. Long title that I think was more political than his others. I only have 19 free articles left for the month so will wait for it...

But it really struck me that Republicans are exactly what Diamond was talking about in Collapse. Just like those elite Easter Islanders who, in our eyes stupidly, cut down the last trees to feed their greed for power, condemning their society to collapse.

The way we are going I doubt we will be able to look our grandkids in the eye.

who clung to the way they'd always done things, regardless of whether the conditions still existed to sustain those contrast to the Inuit who adapted to the conditions that actually existed in a changing Greenland.

That's the story that always strikes me.  Waiting and waiting for a ship to bring help from somewhere else, all the while starving because you refuse to use the (unfamiliar) resources that are all around you.

cannot see the GOP as anything but our ruling class - now clearly blinded by the 1% as much as their own delusions.

Come to think of it, this group isn't just blind, they're deaf as well.

...and Democrats (albeit differently since there is more opposition to its most egregious behavior in the latter), but the ruling class itself is not bound by party politics. Harold Hamm and Sheldon Adelson and Foster Friess may be registered as Republicans, but that's coincidental to their objectives.
