that's been accused of "ruining our culture"...

In the late 1700s, Ben Franklin was worried about too many Germans immigrating here.

In the 1850s, the Irish were believed to be the threat. They would overwhelm the Protestant culture of the U.S.

In the early 1900s, people wanted to keep out the swarthy people (Jews and Catholics) from Eastern Europe and Southern Europe, with their olive skin, different ways, and foreign languages.

It's the same damn thing, over and over, but with different immigrant groups. Now it's Hispanics. And Steve King wants to make English the official language, because we shouldn't let anyone speak another language.

There are two things a poor person can believe about who's to blame for why he or she is poor: Either 1) The rich are keeping you poor by their policies on the job and in government, or 2) It's those darn immigrants from another land who are to blame. The Republicans desperately want poor people to blame the immigrants.

Here's a great scene from the movie "Matewan." (Warning: offensive language at the very beginning, including the words "nigger" and "dago.") Then one of the union guys explains that the struggle is between "them that work and them that don't." It's a powerful scene that makes me catch my breath, the way he turns the crowd to his side:

But the angle said to them, "Do not be Alfred. A sailor has been born to you"
