There are a number of science fiction stories (and conspiracy theories) that suggest that the elite doesn't care about the destruction of society - indeed they hope to hurry it along - because they want to wipe out all the "parasites". After the parasites are gone, the virtuous elites will emerge to enjoy the fruits of a depopulated Earth. They will have a blank slate where they will build their new Garden of Eden (no work slaves required - they will just pluck fruit off of trees).

No one wants to talk about how they will fight to establish the new pecking order amongst themselves. Their philosophy requires them each to think they will be the one at the top of the pecking order (or at least they will know who to suck up to) just because they are savvy elites.

While science fiction authors keep this scenario before us, it's considered bad taste and crazy talk to suggest this is what many hardcore conservatives actually think. But take a look at the bunkers and the gold-hoarding! It seems to me that there is more than a little "wink wink nudge nudge" going on about the imminent collapse of civilized society.

Even if you don't believe there are any conspiracies behind this line of thinking, just the notion that there may be a critical mass of conservatives thinking it at the same time shows why they aren't even bothering to repair our public infrastructure anymore. They have given up on civilization, and they are just looking for the nearest exit so they can ensure their personal survival.
