and respect for Reid after talking to a couple of his constituents during NN10 in Las Vegas; it was a slow period at the registration desk and we were just hanging out.

Sure, he's not the most progressive dude in the Senate, but he does his job and does it well. And I think that brings up another fact -- you go to battle with the Congress you've got, not the Congress you wish you had, and a candidate that would work in, say, San Francisco or New York will fall flat in Las Vegas or Omaha or Cincinnati. Doesn't mean we stop trying to get better Democrats where we can...but we have to understand that it's going to take a while and we might not even see it in our lifetimes. It's going to take widespread education of the American public, and we might have to wait till attrition takes its toll on some of the hardliners.

Certainly as a senator from Nevada I think he's about as good as we can reasonably hope for. My quarrels with him have only been as Majority Leader-- particularly during the last two years of the Bush Presidency.

But he's surprised me a number of times more recently with his willingness to use the weapons at his disposal, as on this occasion.
