Last year when I still had time to read and write at length I started a series of diaries from the letters my grandfather wrote home from France near the end and following World War I. He was a Quaker and instead of serving in the military served in the American Friends Service Committee doing relief and reconstruction work. He wrote his new wife, my grandmother, his parents and his sister regularly and was a practiced writer (award winning orator) so his letters are compelling. He spent a good bit of his time near Verdun rebuilding some of the worst destroyed areas and hiking and biking around areas that had yet to be cleared of the wreckage of war... including bodies and bones.
