    a big factor is that we don't teach much about what went on between the wars, other than to note that Germany's economy was in ruins from inflation, making them ripe for demagogues. But in all those countries, you're not just missing a significant number of men from WW1, you're also missing the sons they never fathered - the group that would have been of age to fight to push back against Hitler. So not only is there the memory of loss, there's the reality of a smaller fighting force, coupled with a desire not to lose a second generation in a row.
