I have a great affection for the essay as a form of writing.  Most of the time, what I write is very pedestrian and sort of utilitiarian writing.  Ok for conveying information, but not much more.  Every once in a while I get the mix right and feel like I've moved to a little bit higher level.
If you like this piece, there is one other, on a very different subject that you might enjoy.
