in the Irving, Texas juvenile facility when I tried hitchhiking to El Paso or some such dumbass thing. I was maybe 13 years old.  A year later I was more successful and wound up getting a ride to Austin where the weed and music came out along with the frisbee.  I thought I'd landed in paradise, but had to leave the next day.

After sleeping for a couple of hours in a phone booth and then an abandoned house, I had had enough and called my dad who gave his credit card number to a motel clerk and I got a decent nights sleep before getting a ride from a Jesus freak who drove me all the way home.

I also got to experience the hospitality of the Marshall, TX hoosegow (adult version) a year later when I got picked up hitchhiking there.  Bastard jailer wouldn't let me sit on my cot before lights out.  My dad bailed me out of that situation too.  After getting picked up by a pervert one day (who was fortunately harmless and let me out when I asked him to) I gave up hitching rides.  Times were changing from the 60's.
