    ...and they made the pilgrimages in order to assert their rights as the majority in the country, long oppressed under Saddam.  None of that applies in this case so there's a legitimate presumption against the genuineness of their pilgrimage, especially if they're all in the paramilitary demographic.

      pilgrimage to Karbala before they die. It is third only to Mecca and Medina for Shiite. i don't think the same can be said about any place in Syria.

      making pilgrimages to sites in Iraq. Of course, the Iraqis also made pilgrimages to the sites during the same time period.
      Re: paramilitary demographic, in countries such as Iran, how many healthy young men, aged 18-45 are not in some sort of militia or paramilitary home guard situation?
