  •  But then again... (3+ / 0-)

....remember that once Richard actually met Saladin, he discovered to some people's acute dismay that he actually liked the guy. And fuck the religion part of it. They got along like a house on fire. The dead-enders at home were sure pissed about that. He was supposed to be killing Moslems, not chumming with them and signing treaties.

    •  Well what do you expect (0+ / 0-)

they were probably two of the most psychopathic men of their day. Birds of a feather...

If I recall correctly, the story goes that Saladin came to admire Richard during a battle where, after being unhorsed, he went on to go all cuisinart through the Saracen hordes with his sword. Saladin was so impressed by Richard's blood-soaked fury that he sent him a new horse.

      •  Actually Saladin was merciful to people (0+ / 0-)

        Unless you were a Crusader.
When he marched into a town that may have been taken over with Crusaders, after he dispatched them the people were allowed to continue as they did before the Crusaders invaded.
A Crusader by the name of Raynald had an outpost that was right smack dab on a pilgrims route to Mecca.
Whenever he wanted some cash he would raid it, kill everyone and steal their stuff. He was warned at the time by to knock it off and respect treaties.
Well one day he just couldn't help himself and he attacked a huge but lightly defended pilgrimage.
In that party was Saladin's sister.
Well sometime after that Raynald found himself face to face with Saladin.
Soon after that Raynald found his head severed from his body and dragged around.

      Al-Adil who was Saladin's brother.
Al-Adil was a sort of a diplomatic liaison between Richard and Saladin.
And Richard was so taken with him that a plan they came up with to settle the Jerusalem question was that Richard would marry a sister of theirs or something. That way Saladin and Richard would rule Jerusalem together.
        But that never happened.
Richard and Saladin had mutual respect for each other though.
