  •  Yes Blue Dogs were A Problem (0+ / 0-)

But, IMO, Obama set the tone by not making an example of Lieberman who gave a damn speech against Obama AT the Republican Convention and actively campaigned for McCain.  I mean WTF?

And then instead of Obama telling Lieberman good luck with his new buddies in the GOP, Obama lets Lieberman keep his committee chairmanships?

If Obama would have stripped Lieberman of his Homeland Security chairmanship, I think the other Blue Dogs would have got the message and got in line.

    •  President doesn't control committee chairs (1+ / 0-)

there's a separation of powers issue here -- he does not, never did, control the legislative branch. He may or may not have had any influence there. Biden may have tried to twist some arms (that's behind the scenes and we'll never know) but ultimately they couldn't control what went on down the street.

      •  Reid could have been pressured. (0+ / 0-)

O won a resounding victory in 08, and should have been able to leverage that into some action by Reid in the Senate. If they had wanted to, which I very much doubt.

They certainly could have killed the filibuster, and found a nice damp office for former Committee Chairman Lieberman in the sub-basement. If they had wanted to.

    •  It appears that Obama genuinely believed.... (0+ / 0-)

his Republican opponents were willing to put America's well-being ahead of narrow partisan gain and would be working with him in good faith.

Now he knows better, and his take-no-prisoners smackdown of Mitt Romney is most refreshing. It's really tragic that he didn't see what all of us here recognize about the modern Republican lunatic party a couple of years earlier.
