At least, not for the better. NATO has been unable to establish any durable Afghan governance or functioning military whatsoever, after all this time.

The ANA we've been building and training will most likely disintegrate very soon after US troops withdraw. There has never been an Afghan national army that lasted more than a few months, and there is not one now. The entire occupation of Afghanistan is little more than a neo-con pipe dream that never had the slightest chance of succeeding.

So why are we still there? I'm not sure there is a reason any longer. Maybe it's just a matter of simple momentum, and mulish pride.

The American public, and the Congress, and the President, all seem to have been perfectly OK with it -- though perhaps getting a trifle impatient lately.
