  •  One of my Repub friends (4+ / 0-)

took an awfully long time today to say anything about the Ryan candidacy.  When he finally did, he cited Ryan's intelligence and youth, calling him "A real comer."  My guess is that he was waiting to get the party talking points before he said anything, because his recent attempts to show what an insider he is by getting ahead of the talking points have failed.  Anyway, if the official Party line is that Ryan is a comer, then we're watching the Republicans lurch even further to the right.

Oh, he also said Ryan would beat Biden when they debate.  If it were purely a judged, content-neutral event like a high school debate, that one might actually be possible.

    •  Ryan is Set Up Nicely for 2016 (7+ / 0-)

I suspect that is why the pressure for Ryan occurred.  Republican establishment types realize that they are probably in for a train wreck.

From their perspective, they can at least use this to build the profile of Ryan for next time.  He is a Palin that won't self implode in a year's time.

      •  Fortunately, he should be an easy target in 2016. (4+ / 0-)

He's a known quantity (a quantity of something quite unpleasant, might I add), and he is a career politician with only his position in the Budget Committee to show for his service.

Presumably, the deficit is going to continue shrinking if Obama secures a second term, so that's going to undercut his positions on gutting entitlements as well. Not to mention, AARP will be hammering away at him.

what type of ads come out from AARP. I expect them to be brutal, but in the past few years AARP has taken some strange positions on some topics. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

I'm guessing that "sure up" may be a regional variant? Dunno. :-)

        QUESTION
I did something to strengthen my position. Did I "sure" up my position or "shore" up my position?

        GRAMMAR'S RESPONSE
You have tried to "shore up" your position. (The past tense of that, "shored up," sounds very strange, doesn't it?) "Sure up" is an interesting twist on things, but I don't think you'll find it in the dictionaries -- at least not yet.
