    it was written only on behalf of the Hebrews, who apparently had no moral problems with annihilating any pagan populations that got in their way to establishing Zion or their "promised land". The author of this would not have applied this concept of justice for the poor to non-hebrew groups.

    This is what I mean about the problem with using religious texts to justify anything in terms of morality. You can cherry pick, yes, but at the risk of ignoring the whole context and thus undermining the authority of the cherry picked part.
