The (Romney) campaign skipped only one obvious potential source of insight on the candidates: Romney aides say they did not conduct any polls or focus groups to see how the potential running mates might play with voters.
I find that surprising for "data driven" Romney who seems to slice and dice his policy positions according to which electorate he's trying to grab and flip-flops to them. I'm not sure I believe it. But if they did not do polling and Carville's polling is right, it's a pretty major error.

They outsourced it....Do you really believe they didn't focus group the pick to death?

Come on...don't believe the spin laundered through politico...especially when it doesn't make any sense

I think this pick was about one thing only, how Romney could get thru the convention and the next 3 months with as little personal humiliation as possible.

First, toss red meat to the Base, to shut up the interminable whining.  He couldn't stand being humiliated at his own nomination.

Second, get someone to draw crowds.

Third, someone else for the press to focus on.  Someone shiny enough, to take the heat off for a while.

From what I've heard of Willard's micro-managing of the campaign, plus the rumors of him ignoring his campaign's advice, I would not be at all surprised if he made the decision for those reasons, and then forbad any focus-testing that might have highlighted how stupid it was.
