    Friends said they felt more alive when they were with him.
    Indeed, weren't many of his characters fashioned after his real acquaintances? I seem to recall they were often very much obviously portrayed and that Chambers was not the only one to have a rift with him after publication of his work.
    I agree with you that he was no more kind to himself than others. He allows for the reality of human complexity. Nobody is without flaws, even sometimes reprehensible ones.
