    ....I would suggest reading her story "Isis in Darkness," which was published in Granta (where I read it) and probably elsewhere. It's one of her few prose pieces that escapes an irritating tendency to be snarky in inappropriate places. Even The Handmaid's Tale was spoiled by this -- framing it with what was essentially a send-up of literary research in universities was very "off" to my ear.

    She's a much better poet than prose writer, in my opinion. I had the luck to hear her read some of her own works many years ago -- a small woman with something of the sparrow about her, but not someone you would want to argue with. Ever. She's far too sharp.
