on the untimely passing of your brother. I am totally outraged that our society has fallen so low that health care is withheld from the needy. Those low-cost high-deductible plans should be outlawed, since the very people that have to buy them are by definition unable to meet the deductible. Of course, if you have such a policy you should have the amount of the deductible set aside in case it's needed - otherwise the policy is useless - but if it's a choice between a savings account and the rent or food I can see why that doesn't happen. It's also strange that the people who don't work qualify for Medicaid and other programs, but the people who do work but don't make much are screwed.

In my state, at least, an unemployed or underemployed adult without young children does not qualify for Medicaid, no matter how broke they are. So your last sentence isn't the case here in WA, and it's probably not the case in a number of other states. Medicaid is given to those who have young children to protect the child and her parent. No kids = no healthcare.

Why are war casualty counts "American troops" and "others" but never "human beings"?

I expressed myself badly. I know that not everyone without a job is covered by Medicaid. I should have said "people who don't work can qualify for Medicaid and other programs..." Obviously other factors - children, disability- affect their qualification.
        Thanks for the clarification.
