  •  IF we can find a job that is (19+ / 0-)

One other problem I am finding is the older I get, the harder it is to find a job. Over 60 it is even harder.

    •  Yup, it's nearly impossible (15+ / 0-)

Lost my great business when no bank would lend to small business in our town without real estate to back the loan. Nevermind if the business is good, the recession means banks won't take on small business.

Now 60, vigorous and healthy, smart with a great resume, and almost no one will even interview me. I have had three interviews in four months. I'm not sending anymore resumes--what's the point?

The places I interviewed passed in favor of less-experienced younger candidates--one hired a new MBA fresh out of school with zero experience in the field and position (product managers take significant training before being able to do the job, but the company went with someone who will take at least a year to be effective, rather than go with the older guy.)

I'm moving back toward business. I'm working with another older guy (even older than me!) to fire up a new company. I'm looking into how to consult in my field. I'm writing, building presentations and programs.

Five more years to Medicare, and I'm paying a cool thousand a month for health insurance with a 5K deductible.

Hang in there, all of you, think out of the box, find the way to offer your expertise and knowledge without needing the normal job--cause that's about the only option. Agism is real.

      •  And ageism is but one reason why (10+ / 0-)

raising the retirement age is an offensive and ridiculous absurdity. In rural areas employment for people over 60 is just about non-existent. Hell, there aren't many jobs for anybody right now. But you're right about using creativity and imagination to come up with other solutions and it sounds like you're doing a good job of it.

      •  I went through a year and a half of that (1+ / 0-)

I could afford it, but most people can't.

I've been told to lie about my age by dying my hair and cutting my resume, deleting dates and such.
That's BS. If I were interviewing a person and they fudged dates or their interview story didn't jib with the resume, I'd show 'em the door.
While I may be young at heart and can run circles around the guy's interviewing me (literally, 23 miles last week), one look at the growing patterns of lines around my eyes and neck...well, who's kidding whom?
Besides, lying to get a job is kind of scummy, ya' know?
