and great to see ya. Wow, really interesting diary, I'll have to take a closer look at that!

Kudos to you for turning your neighbors on to composting. It really isn't so hard though I know from Will Allen's work in Milwaukee that when you're trying to actually build soil you have to get your compost to just the right temperature.

I'd love to hear more about the composting toilet, maybe another diary?

    •  I found out about Will Allen (4+ / 0-)

by way of a guy named John Kohler (sp?) who has a great, Great, GREAT You Tube channel called growingyourgreens.  He's at GrowingYourGreens.com  I highly recommend his channel to anyone who knows nothing about this and wants to get started, or even those with some experience.  He did a big piece on Will Allen.

I'm pretty lucky, my one acre of land has pretty much just been left alone.  There are an incredible number of insects, mushrooms, birds.  From my deck I've seen at least 50 different species, if you include insects.  Everything from buzzards to bats, snakes, coyote, lizard, 5 different kinds of frogs, teeming with life.  The dirt here is very rich, and I'm making it even better.

When the weather cools down I'm making a hugelkultur bed, are you familiar with it?   I think they invented it in Socialandia.

on a magical patch of earth, Xavier.

The link to the Hugelkultur doesn't work, but may I speculate that it has something to do with sloped beds of plants?

I just saw Will Allen give a talk about his new book, The Good Food Revolution. It's a great one, and when I get around to it I'll review it. His next big thing is "vertical agriculture" which is particularly interesting within the dense urban growing space.

Love the growingyourgreens channel, that's a good one to bookmark!

really is magical.  Funny you chose that word.  The first time I walked to the back I literally gasped -- it was so beautiful, full of art and magic and life.

Sorry about the broken link, try this:

It's more than just sloped; it's built over tree trunks.  Long-term carbon sequestration and really just an amazingly good concept.

Speaking of Socialandia -- have you ever heard of Sepp Holzer?  I think he's one of the main ones behind this, at least he's one of Paul Wheaton's main inspirations.

I hadn't heard of Sepp Holzer, but I'll ask my permaculture buddy. I guess technically it would have to be "Hügelkultur" as the the word really has an Umlaut. I know, nitpicky German I am. ;-)
