  •  Yeah as much as he tried, it wouldn't come out (3+ / 0-)

No vocal eliminator on the old Fostex - this was 1985 or 1986 when he tried to do that. Nice for garage-band recordings, but not for anything really serious.

    •  yeah, i had a teac portastudio... (4+ / 0-)

back in my garage band days.  i think that i still have it somewhere.  i pulled it back out in the 90's to record a friend of mine's band when they played out a few times; later when i produced an album for him, we used one of the tapes i recorded for a track on his cd.

      •  I remember that Teac! (3+ / 0-)

That was a step up from the Fostex for sure.
A couple people have told me Fostex makes some decent stuff now that it's digital. Fostex analog was really just for the garage.
Or maybe I'm just spoiled nowadays, we thought it was pretty great back in the day.

the portastudio ran at twice the speed of the fostex, which made the frequency response of the teac a lot better.  after playing around with the portastudio for a while though, i started working at a radio station and their production studio had an open reel ampex deck that ran at 15 or 30 ips.  it made my portastudio sound like crap.  naturally i started to hang around the station late at night...
