very important distinction is that he was the 1st black goverernor in UNITED STATES history and that it was in a state that was not only a member of the conferderacy, it's current state capitol, Richmond, was the capitol of the confederacy.  I was there, I supported him & voted for him,  (and even I had to go back and research this just to make sure I hadn't imagined this particular factoid) because it is UNIMAGINEABLE in VA now.

    •  I was there too (0+ / 0-)

worked for his campaign in Portsmouth and Chesapeake... his election was a lot closer than it should have been; if you look at the votes Don Beyer and Mary Sue Terry got versus the number of votes Wilder got, a lot of people voted a straight democratic ticket... but did not vote for governor. If everyone who voted for  the democratic lt gov and attorney general had also voted for Wilder there would not have been a need for a recount...

Fear doesn't just breed incomprehension. It also breeds a spiteful, resentful hate of anyone and everyone who is in any way different from you.
