  •  Policy implications? The HeyMikey plan. (0+ / 0-)

    1. Raise minimum wage to living wage.

    2. Require overtime to start at 30 hours a week, not 40.

This would push employers to spread the same amount of work around among more people, i.e., hire new people instead of working the existing people more.

Let's say living-wage level is annual poverty level x 125% divided by 50 weeks divided by 30 hours a week. Thus by working 30 hours a week, you'd earn 125% of poverty, with two weeks off a year for sick & personal time.

Poverty for a family of 4 is now officially about $23,000. (Unrealistically low, but let's use that for now.) Times 125% = $28,750. Divided by 50 weeks = $575 a week. Divided by 30 hours = $19.17 per hour.

Voila, the HeyMikey minimum wage: $19 an hour.
