• ##### Policy implications? The HeyMikey plan.(0+ / 0-)

1. Raise minimum wage to living wage.

2. Require overtime to start at 30 hours a week, not 40.

This would push employers to spread the same amount of work around among more people, i.e., hire new people instead of working the existing people more.

Math:

Let's say living-wage level is annual poverty level x 125% divided by 50 weeks divided by 30 hours a week. Thus by working 30 hours a week, you'd earn 125% of poverty, with two weeks off a year for sick & personal time.

Poverty for a family of 4 is now officially about \$23,000. (Unrealistically low, but let's use that for now.) Times 125% = \$28,750. Divided by 50 weeks = \$575 a week. Divided by 30 hours = \$19.17 per hour.

Voila, the HeyMikey minimum wage: \$19 an hour.
