  •  Truman, who created the CIA so as to (8+ / 0-)

coordinate intelligence, later had thoughts about what he had done.

A month after JFK was assassinated, Truman wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post. It appeared in only one edition, and was never remarked upon by... well, anyone at all in the media.

For some time I have been disturbed by the way CIA has been diverted from its original assignment. It has become an operational and at times a policy-making arm of the Government. This has led to trouble and may have compounded our difficulties in several explosive areas.

I never had any thought that when I set up the CIA that it would be injected into peacetime cloak and dagger operations. ...

....We have grown up as a nation, respected for our free institutions and for our ability to maintain a free and open society. There is something about the way the CIA has been functioning that is casting a shadow over our historic position and I feel that we need to correct it.

    and, elsewhere...
Now, as nearly as I can make out, those fellows in the CIA don't just report on wars and the like, they go out and make their own, and there's nobody to keep track of what they're up to. They spend billions of dollars on stirring up trouble so they'll have something to report on. They've's become a government all of its own and all secret. They don't have to account to anybody.

    Harry S. Truman, 1973

And in exchanges with Merle Miller, Truman said
About the same time — after the Bay of Pigs — he was privately telling Merle Miller that CIA was "a mistake," which "if I'd known what was going to happen, I never would have done it.
Now, of course, our CIA is actually conducting wars, as we move away from the voter-disliked massive troop presence to killing innocents thousands of miles away through one of our, very very many, secret police agencies.

The Internet is just the tail of the Corporate Media dog.

    •  Now we have a huge military security complex (5+ / 0-)

that has the capability to squash dissent here in the US

Last week heard the environmentalist from Oberlin, David K. Orr talk about how us humans are influencing the climate for possibly thousands of years.

The big issue of the age is the environment.

Our political soap opera and our consumer society are oblivious to what is going on.

It is good to see a post like this on DK that is not just about what Mitt had for breakfast.
