I'm not much of a commenter, but couldn't let this one go.  my last job in the corporate world (I'm now a self-employed CPA working with real live small businesses) was at Bain (late 80s).  At that time, my guess is that there were 250-1000 employees.  I worked in the administrative, rather than consulting side.

The culture there was the anthithesis of a small business; it was very corporate, very button-down.  I never met Mitt Romney, but I can also say that the icon there was not Mitt Romney, but Bill Bain, whose name the company has.  It was his ideas, his contacts that built the business.  If it was Romney's company, why isn't the name "Romney and Company"?  Romney was a member of a committee that ran the company - a committee of 5 or 6, I believe.  In other words, he can only take so much credit for its success (all of this is public information, so I don't mind repeating it).
