County), but a couple of weeks ago, I renewed my license at the DMV office on Route 1 in Prince Georges County because it was on my way after dropping off my daughter at camp. Much bigger and busier place, and I did have a 20 minute wait. But it was highly efficient -- go through a line to tell them what you need, get a receipt with a number, then sit down in a very large seating area and wait for the number to be called. So no standing for long periods of time. I read my book because they do both a spoken and visual announcement of the numbers.
No one was wonderfully friendly (they used to be very friendly to my elderly father at Glenmont, but that might be because he was a very sweet, cuddly looking elderly man), but everyone was polite and competent.
Now I was just getting my license renewed -- maybe if I were doing something more difficult, it wouldn't have been so wonderful.
But my husband has renewed our vehicle registration on line -- after they expired, and it worked extremely well.

    •  That sounds like our system. (0+ / 0-)

check in, get a number, take a seat. Lots of clerks, it normally doesn't take very long.

That changed the system a little over the years, but it's pretty efficient.
