In our alleged democracy, an "informed electorate" is supposed to rule.  Me?  I rule myself.  However, I'm quite sure our government already has copies of everyone's emails and texts, so I don't expect any privacy.

It's necessary and appropriate for ambassadors and their staff to be able to report on their missions and areas of concern in a confidential manner.  Do we want our policy-makers to be able to get unbiased, frank assessments from the foreign service officers sent to be our republic's eyes and ears in other countries?  Or do we want them to only get whitewashed, self-censored happy talk that won't offend anyone if it appears on the front page of the New York Times?
