  •  Ralph Maxwell is a friend of mine. (32+ / 0-)

I've known Ralph (whom we call Buzzy) since I was a law school classmate of his wife's and daughter's.  Yes, his wife, Elizabeth went to law school after five of their children had grown and gone off to make their livings and while one of their daughters was already enrolled.  They are an extraordinary family -- Jan was nominated for a Toni this year for her starring role in Follies on Broadway; Richard (number six, was six years old and stayed home with his dad when his mother went off to Law School) is a hugely well regarded theatre director and playwright, Nancy teaches law at Washburn U in Kansas, and the other three are also wonderfully accomplished adults.  That's Richard interviewing him on the youtube video.

But there's way more.  Ralph began competing in Master track and field events when he was 76 years old, having just taken it up -- not after running track or throwing discus, etc., in other settings.  At 91 he achieved his goal of being named Athlete of the Year in Masters Track and Field; and he set a decathlon record that some say may never be seriously challenged.  After the first day of the two-day event, Buzzy had smashed the previous record and he still had five events to go!

And, all this doesn't say that he, himself, is a trained and extraordinarily talented actor, a playwright and a novelist.  The man's energy and talent really know no bounds.

In 2008 Buzzy attended an Obama rally in Fargo, ND, in his WWII uniform and, seated in the first row, he got to shake Obama's hand.  The picture of that event appeared in Obama's convention video - so he's not unknown to the campaign.  I second the emotion that he should be given a role at the convention.  He'll bring down the house, I promise.
