  •  You describe how things should work not how they (23+ / 0-)

always do. There is a frighteningly large contingent of officers (they have an organization based in CO Springs, CO) whose allegiance to Jesus is higher than their allegiance to the U.S.  Constitution.

I wish I could remember the name of the group. I perused their discussion forums a few years ago but was too disturbed to continue.

I saw some of it first hand in the USAF from 1984 to 1994. It should be stamped out but may have too much momentum already.

      •  It's ironic, old Military Pagans knew about this (7+ / 0-)

and made a stink about it some 20 years ago.

        No one listened.

        Oh well.

        And here we are.

Operations Officer training took place. Was it Lowry or Buckley? I remember there was a lot of sleaze going down on Colfax Ave but there was also a good noodle shop down toward the Denver Museum of Fine Arts. Whoa. Does the Matrix have me?

Obviously, it was forgettable. But I do remember that some of the few USAF-associated people I connected with were Pagans. And computer aficionados. Not Microsoft, there was a better PC around back then. Most people now have never heard of it. Jay Miner invented it and no one has ever heard of him.

          That was circa 1990.

Prior to that, a Navy officer, senior to me, told me things weren't so bad in the Navy WRT to religious extremism. I hope he was right.

    •  I never hid my atheism or political affiliation (0+ / 0-)

during my USAF career, from 1973 to 1997. I didn't talk about it, but if anyone asked I'd tell them.  No one ever gave me trouble, tried to bully me into attending prayer breakfasts, or gave me a bad fitness report.  In fact I had a great career.

Yes, the evangelicals were around during my time, and some of them were pretty obnoxious.  I guess I should be happy I never was assigned to the AF Academy ... things might not have gone so well for me there.

At one point I was executive officer for a wing commander in Alaska.  One of my duties was to read officer and senior enlisted fitness reports sent up for the commander's endorsement.  Every now and then I'd get one that extolled the ratee's Christian (always Christian, never anything else) faith and off-duty church activities.  I'd send these back, and the wing commander always backed me up.  That's how it's supposed to work ... and in my experience, it generally did.

        Did you make General?

I resigned my commission at Clovis AFB, NM around the time MAC, TAC, and SAC became ACC and AMC. The cars that went through the gate had bumper stickers saying things like "Rush is right!" and "Liberalism is a social disease."

Never once did I see a countervailing bumper sticker. Around that time, early 1990's, Rush was the one political TV show (his TV show didn't last long) on Armed Forces TV. I have read that  his is still the one political radio show on Armed Forces radio.

My point is, I'm concerned about the allegiances of many U.S. military personnel. I hope you are right.

        •  Sorry. Cannon AFB, NM (0+ / 0-)

Poor Cannon. I don't even remember why the base was named after him. Clovis however, was unforgettable. I have never before, or since, lived in a town without a single bookstore.

It had a Walmart, cattle feedlots, a railroad switch yard, and an AFB full of the most expensive old jets the taxpayers could possibly waste their money on. We sold 'em all to Australia just after I left.

Boy that that bomb range will never threaten America again by golly.
