    she was the most expensive thing in the Republic. George Washington had the Navy plant enough live oak trees to rebuild her. In 1916 Washington's grove began to get heart rot so the master ship wright recommended they be cut down and buried in the salt water mud below low tide, a traditional way to store hardwood for ship building. When she was rebuilt, IIRC, in the late 70's, the Forest Product laboratory scientists searching her records came across that story and dug 'em up. They were still good and were incorporated in that rebuild.
