    my husband works for laid off enormous amounts of people, bought a competitor and laid people off and doubled everyone's workload.  No extra pay, of course.  There is simply no "down time", everyone is starkly aware of that reserve army of desperate people waiting for their jobs, willing to work for less.  

    The situation with the Chicago teachers is similar.  Even on Dkos, a lot of people are unsupportive of the strike because they are asking for a modest pay raise.  Apparently even for unions, anything but givebacks is considered wholly unacceptable.  But the ruling class can demand more and more with no problem.
