What an amazing, poignant, jarring account!  It is hard to understand that this was  business-as-usual, common in the South of the 1950's--and, i am sure, in other places, also.   I sobbed, tears forming in my eyes, then shook with rage that many people just cannot come to  terms with this, cannot acknowledge it:  it is these people--not just the perpetrators themselves--who are our real enemies, because these people allow it, even encourage it with their silence.   And the real horror is that this will go on for as  long as they do.
