  •  Christianity exists in many forms. (6+ / 0-)

Many of them have gotten pretty twisted, and many of us are poor examples of Christ's teachings. But the people who truly follow Christ are not out there calling attention to their piety, as Jesus had some pretty strong words on that subject:

13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. [14] [b]

15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are. Mat 23:13-15

The founding fathers knew of the mutually corrupting influences of Church and state, wisely sending them to opposite corners.

    •  The BIG problem wasn't Matthew, it was Paul. (3+ / 0-)

If Paul hadn't decided Jesus was a one-size-fits-all Messiah, we wouldn't be in this mess. Jesus would be just another footnote in  Jewish history, not as bad as Sabbatai Zvi or Jacob Franks, maybe as influential as the Baal Shem Tov, or Rav Gershom. But with Paul and Emperor Constantin's mother, we get this craziness derailing Western Civ.

I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves. -John Wayne (-9.00,-8.86)
