  •  What did I do when I knew? I've known most (6+ / 0-)

of my life that the earth was undergoing changes--I was just a child when Jimmy Carter was president, but I remember hearing my dad talk about how smart he thought it was that he put solar panels on the White House, and tried to set an example for Americans to start saving energy. My dad was an old-time "mountain man." He knew a great deal about the plants and animals of the region, about the weather patterns, and had a wealth of knowledge about anything having to do with the outdoors. He used to point things out to us--like how there were fewer birds of a certain type than he remembered as a boy, or how certain plants seemed to be disappearing. I realize now that he probably noticed that the climate was changing, even 30 or 40 years ago.

I knew, from an early age, that the environment was changing in was that were very bad, but it wasn't until I got older that I realized that things could change so quickly that it could actually threaten us as a species. I started reading everything I could get my hands on about climate change--and as much as I have been able, to "go back to the way I was raised." That's keeping a garden, recycling and reusing, and trying to find ways we can live a lower energy lifestyle.

I have decided that I am going to buy a small farm somewhere--and "return to my raising" I guess you could say. I want my children to have the security of having a self-sufficient homestead in the family--and I want them to have the opportunity to learn how to live that lifestyle. One day, it could be a lifesaver for them and any children they may have.

There is also the question of finding ways to adapt to climate change. We may need to learn different ways to garden, keep livestock, and provide for many of our basic needs. Owning a piece of property somewhere will give me the opportunity to experiment with some different things I want to try.
