Things changed in 2003 with the Extradition Act which implemeted the treaty between the USA and UK. If you look at the McKinnon case, the US only started proceedings once the Act was in place in 2005 and the UK courts could no longer examine the evidence to assess if there was a prima face case.

As I explain elsewhere in this thread, Assange's fate is now in his own hands and the Swedes. The only legal option for the British police, under EU treaty obligations, is to hand Assange to the Swedish prosecution authorites. They must, following the ruling by the UK Supreme Court, execute the European Arrest Warrant.

    •  You've lost the thread. (0+ / 0-)

This entire conversation was about the question -

"If the US wants Assange, why don't they just extradite him from the UK".

      •  No, it was not. The question was about rendition. (0+ / 0-)

My question was in response to the Conspiracy Theory that the Swedes would allow the US to subject Assange to rendition.  The examples the Conspiracy Theorists provided were not about extradition, but about secret renditions that didn't involve the formal extradition process.
