  •  that applies during pregnancy as well... (12+ / 0-)

...a malnourished pregnant mother will not be able to adequately provide the nutrition needed by the fetal child. There are many stages of fetal development that can be disrupted by the mother's poor nutrition. Some of those stages of development are extremely time-sensitive and one-shot-only - if missed, that organ system may never fully develop nor function properly.

Chronic malnutrition in young children also causes stunting - which is what it sounds like - a lack of physical growth. Chronically malnourished kids may end up smaller in stature and weight as adults - due to lack of nutrition when they are children.

Some folks think "well, so what they are just a coupla inches shorter than they would've been...". Well yes, that's true, tho' the flipside is that the skeletal system reflects that - and that means the children will have smaller bones as adults.

What do smaller bones mean to a female's anatomical structure? A lotta times in chronic malnutrition, it leaves the pelvis too small for safe birthing. The rate of birth-related complications, as well as maternal & fetal deaths, well, it skyrockets.

I've worked in some areas of some developing countries where the majority of births were complicated by the mothers' childhood malnutrition
15-20 years before she became pregnant.

The longterm effects of malnutrition stick around to make decades-long after-effects.

as adults, since Body Mass Index is weight divided by the square of height, which means that a small reduction in height increases BMI as much as a large increase in weight.
