  •  He was ANSWERING the question of Abortion (13+ / 0-)

so you are incorrect - his entire answer does address the question of rape and abortion from rape.

JOSH SMITH: Abortion ... our viewers would like to know exactly where you stand ... specifically where you stand when it comes to rape and  when it comes to should it be legal for a woman to be able to get an abortion if she's been raped?

PAUL RYAN: “I’ve always adopted the idea, the position, that the method of conception doesn’t change the definition of life.”

What part of Josh's questions, should it be legal for a woman to be able to get an abortion if she's been raped? do you not see as being a question about rape?

hear Ryan say explicitly that rape victims who become pregnant should be denied access to abortion. i thought that was the thrust of your essay, no? as i said above:

But I think all you can analyze from this is that Ryan does NOT answer the question being asked, mainly his stance on legalized abortion for rape victims.
Ryan did say (in the video) that he was proud of his pro life record blah blah blah, but i listened to the video and i just didn't hear him say "NO, abortion should not be an option for victims of rape."

in fact, i find his avoidance worse than whatever his stance is. if he's so damned proud of it, then answer the question.

but he's way to slick for that.

my other point was spinning what Ryan said... we need to be credible and overblowing statements by people like Ryan is no different than the blow up over Obama using the word "THAT"...  if we want better, than we need to be better, imo.

      •  are you unfamiliar with Laws Ryan has (5+ / 0-)

written and co-authored to ban abortion even in cases of rape and incest?

        •  this is about a specific interview, isn't it? (2+ / 0-)

he didn't answer the question, other than saying he was proud of his pro life stance. he didn't refer to laws he co-sponsored or co-wrote denying abortion to victims of rape as an answer.

and why didn't he? well, maybe he figures (and i'd bet he's right) that most Americans have no idea what bills he's sponsored. he also knows most Americans are moderate.

he's not going to help us make the case against his extreme positions.

however, if we sound extreme ourselves, his radicalism kind of gets drowned out.

not dodging it.    I see no other way to interpret his comments.   In fact, it is quite clear what he is saying -- fertilized eggs are persons and it doesn't matter how they were fertilized.    That is a logical position to take, lots of people support that position,  he has taken it in the past and he is taking it here.   Nothing was out of context.

In fact, it is the only position that make any logical sense; you cannot argue that a fertilized egg is just as valid a persion as anybody else and then make exceptions.   The fact that it is extreme and biologically wrong doesn't make it any less logical.    When pro-lifers carve out exceptions then their position crumbles (as it does when they support wars, but that is another line of argument.)

          •  he answered the question. The reason he worded (7+ / 0-)

his answer the way he did was to make it sound lofty and noble. And he is slick.

There is no way to escape his meaning. He is notoriously anti-choice. He considers abortion to be murder, the taking of life. That is why he is being asked about exceptions for rape.

"the method of conception doesn't change the definition of life."

            ergo> no exceptions for rape.

          •  Yes, he did answer the question for god's sake. (6+ / 0-)

This is how politicians speak.  No politician EVER answers the question directly.  They instead couch their answer to the question they wanted asked, in a way that will hopefully provide them some deniability in the event the public takes affront.

Do you really think there's a chance in hell Ryan would answer the question "No, I don't think a woman has a right to get an abortion if she's raped."???  And give the Obama campaign that soundbite to put in an ad????  No, he has his pat answer down that will not, in a soundbite, provide the actual answer.  There is virtually NO WAY to understand Ryan's response as saying Anything other than "if a woman is raped and gets pregnant, she should not have the right to get an abortion because the fetus is a life that began the second she became pregnant and that life is more important than her well being."  Period.

personal way pfiore8.  If you're uncertain of your relationship with your significant other and you ask him or her "So do you still love me?" and that person answers "I've always  liked you very much.", how secure would you feel in that relationship?  You'd have gotten your answer to your question quite clearly, right?  Just because the person didn't say "No, I don't love you" wouldn't leave you still wondering whether he or she did or not.  That's exactly what Romney did here, and your willingness - nee, eagerness to let him get by with it is quite disconcerting.
