industry now. Yes, you are right about pollution, corruption (I would add the lack of democracy and transparency), but China now leads in solar, wind technologies and almost has a complete monopoly on rare elements and lithium needed for batteries. Yes, you are right, but China will lead the world in its transition to renewable energies. They are also getting a lot of stuff right.

The technocrats in Beijing have to deal with surprisingly powerful provincial officials who usually have enormous (and self-serving) political and economic incentives to keep coal mines open and producing at maximum capacity.  Beijing can't simply decree a master plan to phase out fossil fuels in proportion to how many solar panels, dams, and wind turbines they're physically capable of building.  Also China has a perverse incentive to keep petroleum flowing into the country to fuel all the cars that comparatively well-to-do urban dwellers insist on having.  China's urbanized middle class is one of the regime's most reliable constituencies because they've benefited the most from China's market-oriented policies; most of the unrest takes place in the over-exploited and under-served rural areas.

There's also a strong and frankly absurd attitude that since the West was able to pollute uninhibitedly, China should be able to as well, and that holding China to a higher standard is just a sinister plot to keep China poor and backward.

To those who say the New Deal didn't work: WWII was also government spending
