I'm a huge fan of Dr. Jackson.  He once gave a totally fascinating speech that began with diabetes and ended with urban design.  I nearly had whiplash!

Maybe folks in VT understand and value the overlap of land use, public health and public safety, but do you think I could interest my highway safety peers in working with urban planners and the public health community?   Nodda chance.  The big money is in road building and the experts are highway engineers.

The TIGER grant process required everyone, even road engineers, to make the case in terms of livability principles. We will have to wait and see how MAP-21 guidance develops.

If you want a real engineer to make the case to other engineers, try to get Gary Toth of PPS involved. He speaks their language!

And yes, Jackson is awesome, his PBS series is out on DVD and worth showing around to anyone who might listen.

New Urbanism really is the Convenient Remedy!
