  •  He didn't, was brainwashed about the Vietnam War (7+ / 0-)

Seriously, that was what he said and he tanked against Nixon.

How he got that far is beyond me.

Ask a Mexican what they think of the Mormon colonies that the Romneys hail from, it's a very interesting forgotten tale.

Texas is Texas, you know. The second you think you got it figured out, it will switch on you. Just ask Rick Perry in 2012.

      •  He was a natural born citizen (9+ / 0-)

because both of his parents were American citizens, even though he was born in Mexico.

        •  show me the birth certificates! jk (2+ / 0-)

        •  But WAS his father a citizen? (1+ / 0-)

George R's father decamped to Mexico and exactly what happened with his citizenship - and that of his mother, one of several sister-wives - is not exactly clear.

Now, he probably was. But it is definitely hazy - so much more so than any "trumped-up" allegations about Obama's birth.

          •  It is not easy to renounce (0+ / 0-)

American citizenship. It doesn't happen accidentally or inadvertently.

Even though George Romney's parents moved to Mexico, they retained their U.S. citizenship and passed it along to their children born in Mexico.

            •  Agree... that's likely the case... (0+ / 0-)

... but my point is that Romney should not engage in this nonsense considering that his own family's situation provides just as much grist for the rumor mill.

Heck, not long ago the GOP was trying to finagle a way for Schwarzenegger to run for president... asking Obama to provide more documentation than exists (or would exist for any other person born in Hawaii in that timeframe) is ridiculous when he's already given whatever there is to give.

McCain was born in Panama to American citizens.
The President has more bona fides about being born on US soil than either McCain or Mitten's father.

    •  I suspect, like John McCain, he was (9+ / 0-)

considered born abroad by American parents (McCain's father was serving in the Panama Canal Zone). Though I had contemplated this issue when we first learned of the Mexican relocation of Romney's grandfather, I am assuming George got a chance to claim his American-ness by virtue of his father's place of origin. As Barak would have, as well, if heaven forbid, Obama's mother had found herself in Kenya while in labor. What's insidious about Romney is that the five wives was in strict counter action to evolving Mormon church code (and US law). And that Mitt, in his Turnaround book, says his grandfather was "called" to Mexico.

      •  I had read that Brigham Young (5+ / 0-)

'sent' the Romneys to  Arizona, and then later 'sent' them to Mexico.  It was necessary to get them out of the country, because the other states refused to admit Utah to statehood as long as they practiced polygamy.  When I first read it, I thought it meant that Brigham Young had sent them on a mission to spread the Mormon religion.  Not so.  It was necessary to downplay the polygamy.
