  •  Okay. But why pick such an unctuous spokesman? (0+ / 0-)

    •  Because Hefner wrote the words that aere the focus (9+ / 0-)

      of the post.

      That's why.

I recently saw an article in which the friggin' SON OF SAM killer came out against gun violence, saying that 'guns should be deglamorized".

Now, I totally, totally, totally agree with him, but that doesn't mean I think he's redeemed or anything.

I think he's right and he speaks with a sort of experience most people don't have. It lends a peculiar sort of credibility.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.

Sure, he's a dirty old man (he was probably born a dirty old man), but did you see where he mentioned the “Playboy Philosophy” and the “Playboy Foundation” in his editorial? Back in the 60's it would have been difficult to overstate how powerful those things were in changing the laws and even the customs that he describes in the article. His “philosophy” helped persuade a generation of society's leaders and just plain folks to question traditional assumptions about sexual morality, and is at least as responsible as any other individual for the legal and cultural advances we've seen in that domain since the 1950s.

It's easy to criticize his excesses, but he's someone who was there and who helped get a lot of it done. He is warning us that he is seeing things slip back to those bad old days.
