An influx of cold fresh water will alter the gradient of warmth and salinity that drives the thermohaline circulation.  But we don't really know how exactly it'll change, or how long the change will last once the ice is gone and the general upward temperature trend becomes the dominant force again: simple slowdown versus the gyres moving and dragging global circulation with them?
