  •  I don't believe that is so (0+ / 0-)

All original sin is, is a desire of total autonomy from god.  The story of Adam and Eve is just one way of expressing the sin through the way of pride, there are many others and it doesn't have to be taken literally from any one story or source.

I'm commenting on your comment simply because, coincidentally, I am submitting a paper for publication in the fall (...heh, fall, get it?) Original Sin in Heorot and Valinor, in which I argue (like Davis and Irving)* for the Germanic expression of original sin is in kin-slaying rather than trespassing an expressed divine law.  The Germanic Original Sin of kin-slaying is in fact woven into the poem of Beowulf as a metaphor in the figure of Grendel the monster.

My basis for my original sin argument is also grounded in a telephonic interview with another scholar of Anglo-Saxon literature, Fr. Guglielmo A. Spirito, Ofm Conv, a Franciscan monk and scholar at the Instituto Teologico di Assisi (Theological Institute of Assisi) who confirmed my assertions and theory and to whom I am very grateful.

Therefore, I would argue the opposite and I believe I stand on firm ground when I argue this: because there are other ways and stories of expressing original sin, a literal reading of any of them is not required as long as the essence of the teaching remains consistent.

We'll see shortly if my argument holds water with a peer-review
