    •  That is not what I've found (8+ / 0-)

Pitbulls, like any other stray dog, are usually just hungry and desperate for human companionship.  Yes, like any stray dog of any breed, some can be dangerous... a stray should always be aproached with caution... but I've rescued several stray pitbulls over the years, and every single one of them was affectionate and gentle.  One was found locked in the closet of an abandoned crackhouse... she begame our personal pet, and was always very gentle with out cats and any children she met... was that way until the day she died 14 years later.  Another was rescued from a suspected dog fighter.  We assumed he would have to be put down immediately, but after evaluation by an animal behavior specialist, it was determined he was extremely good with people and hand only minor socialization issues with other dogs (that he eventually got over).  The fact is, pitbulls were bred to be very loyal to people.  Even aggression toward other dogs is not something they have naturally... they have to be trained into it.

Remember when Michael Vick was arrested for running dog fights?  They found 51 pitbulls on the property.  Everyone assumed most of the dogs would have to be put down.  After the dogs were avaluated by animal behavior specialists, you know how many were uthenized?  Four.  Only four... and one of those was because of health, not behavior issues.  All the rest went on to find new homes.  One even became a therapy dog workig with sick children.  Pitbulls are actually naturally very loyal and loving animals, and it takes considerable effort and abuse to actually turn one mean.  The Vick Dogs are a living testament to that.

Sorry... this is something of a soapbox issue for me because I've seen too many dogs put down only because of what they look like rather than their behavior.

Treasure each day like it will be your last, but treat the earth like you will live forever. -me
