    The guidelines for community moderation are far more complex and ambiguous than the rules for stopping at a stop sign because community moderation requires people to use their best judgment about comments that are fundamentally political in nature. It is not something that could ever be properly performed by some automated system without human intervention.

    I did not HR the tip jar that you are referring to, but I do find that "diary" both trollish and spammy, and I have no quarrel with the trusted users who did HR it, some of whom have been on this site longer than you have. I have seen a number of diarists get manually banned by an admin for posting this type of obnoxious one-sentence spam diary, and I think it is well within the bounds of what can be legitimately HRed.

    If your goal is to complain about excessive HRing of tip jars, in my view you have chosen a very poor diary to use as your example.
