    I was president of my fraternity too.

    It wasn't because I was popular. It was because nobody else wanted to do the work the president had to do. I got elected at a meeting I didn't even attend.

    But then mine was a service/honor fraternity, not a social club.

      To be sure you don't get elected to anything in absentia.  Perfect attendance is a defensive strategy.
