  •  In an odd way, it was a compliment (5+ / 0-)

to you and all the women who fought for our rights. You did such a good job that girls like me grew up not knowing what discrimination really was. I live in California, and your success in my part of the country was so spectacular that I had no personal experience with which to judge. I always knew that not everyone was as lucky as I was, but I assumed it was just a matter of time.

I grew up without fear. Thank you for that.

action I took benefited you personally. I grew up knowing fear. It was a daily ritual, to list in my mind, all the things there were to fear.

I grew up in a very conservative, repressed state, where your economic status determines your sexual caste more so than anything else, except maybe race.

I grew up having to literally fight for every little thing, until finally I just didn't have a whole lot in me to fight with. I was just and am still, so tired.

I sometimes encountered lucky people like yourself and my biggest complaint was that if I aired any grievances, any direct experiences, their first act was to undermine my words by making it clear their good fortune negated whatever bad things I had survived, and the value of lessons I learned.

I had hoped my daughters might grow up as you did. I know that won't happen now, so I have pulled out all the old books and begun all over again, teaching them those harsh lessons I learned so maybe they can recount my tales instead of having to negotiate their own.

I am grateful you changed your mind. We need all the help we can get.

helped to make my experience what it was, whether they affected me directly or not. Please know that not everyone who had an easy time of it would have discounted your experiences. I knew I was lucky. I just assumed momentum would eventually carry that luck to everyone else. Now we know better. Time to get to work.
