But, wouldn't this mean that a whole lot of mainstream Republicans, even some of the seemingly mainstream, somewhat respectable, and professional talking heads we see on TV  would have to be go along with this?
Do these people wake up and say stuff like, "Oh boy! Another new day. Time to get create some more intentional lies that will in the long run do great damage to our country." No, the slide is gradual and allows for ample denial. Desired behavior is rewarded. Those who do not play along find it hard to get a traffic reporter job in Pierre.

These largely unoriginal and craven national pundits earn salaries in the seven figures. There's no heavy lifting. There are vastly more of them than the free market supports; look how badly news organizations are doing these days. There's no one even keeping track if you are right.

There's no limit to the number of people who would love to have those jobs. And someone is paying them incredible salaries in a shrinking industry.

And lastly, who owns the modern media conglomerates? The rich or the poor?

I started reading Shelby Foote's "The Civil War" recently. The politics of the 1800's were even more corrupt than what we see today. So while the GOP today applies certain modern twists, the overall theme is as old as politics itself.
