  •  Assuming we still have free elections. (14+ / 0-)

Demographics are certainly on our side, so long as this country has free elections. The problem is that the Repugs know this, and are doing everything they can to suppress the emerging majority through vote suppression, gerrymandering, dissolution of elected local governments, union-busting, hostility to immigration, and unlimited campaign spending. They are even talking about repealing the 17th Amendment, and Rush Limbaugh has started attacking the 19th! Given the authoritarian mentality now dominant in that Party, I fear that if we lose this election, the Repugs will take even bolder steps to perpetuate their hold on power. They will certainly rescind the Voting Rights act, or at least refuse to enforce it, and may even attempt to redefine citizenship. They are likely to use the civil unrest which will follow from their economic policies (and from unchecked climate change) to institute a kind of martial law, turning the Patriot Act and NDAA against domestic "terrorists" (peaceful demonstrators only, not the militias and gun crazies). And Romney Supreme Court appointments will doom legal challenges to these measures.
Even someone disappointed with President Obama's policies - especially his foreign and security policies - should recognize that re-electing him may be the only way to keep open the possibility of peaceful progressive change in the future. A democratic (& Democratic) majority will only matter if political power still rests - at least tenuously - on a counting of votes.

We absolutely must hold the presidency. I think we will, but if we don't, I pretty much think it's over.

The raw wounds from the Bush years are just beginning to heal slightly. A Romney presidency would be the death of the patient.

whining about how cynical their strategy is, we need to figure out how to energize our voters, especially those you spoke of in your last paragraph:  Even someone disappointed with President Obama's policies - especially his foreign and security policies.

These people are most likely to stay home or even switch sides.
The turnout will not be as large for Obama as in the last election.  While the stakes might be higher, the energy is just not there, I fear.

The Romney camp is great at ginning up fear and it is a great motivator for their target voters.  I agree that the demographics are on our side, but we need to get busy motivating folks to get out and vote. This won't be a slam dunk, especially in this economy.
