Specifics are very important to people during a disaster. Please provide them when they are available and avoid statements that are overbroad, as these may cause needless worry for thousands of people. Worse, rumors could be spread that would result in people taking dangerous actions.

For this reason, I believe the title "levees overtopped," should have included some indication of the location or extent of the overtopping.

This is from a former emergency preparedness specialist who spent a career evaluating disaster communications.

of the levee that was breached (first, overtopped, then officially stated as a breach) was reported as it came in.  this has been a real-time reporting of what has been coming in on the livestream coverage from WWLTV (local cbs station).

we've tried to be very specific as the news came in.  it was originally reported as the title stated.

yes, i probably should have put updates in the diary body but have been non-stop typing what is happening right now.

how would you like to do the next live blog?  your experience is very valuable and would be greatly appreciated!

oh, i'm also exhausted - been up all night after being up and out all day to cover this because i thought people should know.

But, that's not as good as putting the specific next to "levees overtopped." Remember, this is a sensitive subject for Katrina survivors and their families.

The mainstream media often make mistakes in their reporting. We can't help replicating some of them; but some are avoidable.

I hope you can find a volunteer to take over the liveblog while you get some rest.  Unfortunately, I don't have time to head up a liveblog right now. Possibly, I may be able to manage one later today or tomorrow. Meanwhile, there are several other writers here who have blogged disasters previously.

going to link this one to his in the diary - will clarify in the body title, too.

then i'm off to sleep for a couple of hours before the doctor's office.

if you can pick up later in the day - i would love to know what is happening throughout this thing.  i don't think it is going to go as quickly as the weather folk are saying - and if that's the case, it is going to flood out much more than plaquemines parish!

          thanks!
